This side event, with an estimated duration of two hours, aims to present the regulatory situation of distributed generation in selected countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the presentations of experts from institutions in these countries, the main regulatory aspects in the framework of the promotion of distributed generation will be presented. It is expected that, after the presentations of the specialists and the subsequent dialogues, doubts from the private sector will be resolved and an enriching exchange of opinions and experiences will be generated regarding the opportunities and challenges presented by distributed generation, considered as an essential transformation for countries to reach higher levels of clean energy.
Distributed generation has shown significant growth worldwide, driven by its multiple and significant benefits. Its proximity to the consumer makes it possible to reduce losses in the electricity grid, improving system reliability and quality. It also generates important socioeconomic benefits, such as the creation of specialized jobs and the reduction of polluting emissions. In the private sector, companies also benefit from participating in a more efficient energy model, which not only improves their competitiveness, but also reinforces their commitment to environmental protection.
However, the effective implementation of distributed generation requires a robust technical and regulatory framework that includes enabling technologies for renewable energy integration, grid codes, innovative business models, appropriate remuneration mechanisms, efficient market design, energy storage, demand side integration (demand response and demand management) and dynamic line capacity management.
Recent regulations and modifications in Latin American and Caribbean countries have opened opportunities for private actors to establish new initiatives in the framework of distributed generation and storage. To make the most of these opportunities, it is essential to have timely and accurate information on the regulations in force in each country, thus enabling informed and strategic decision making.
Within the framework of the Intersolar 2025 Fair, selected Latin American countries will present to participating companies a detailed overview of the current state of regulation in the industry. The main objective is to expose and enable companies to assess the regulatory situation, facilitating the exploration of business models and the planning of future technological developments.
