Electricity storage between boom and crisis: prospects for the energy transition

The smarter E Podcast Episode 203 | January 9, 2025 | Language: German

Andreas Piepenbrink, founder and Managing Director of E3/DC, a leading provider of energy storage solutions in Germany, is closely following the current market dynamics in the home storage sector. E3/DC has equipped over 150,000 households with its products and Andreas Piepenbrink knows the challenges facing the industry like no other.

In our The smarter E podcast, he provides insights into the current turbulent market development and talks about how forecasting errors affect the entire industry and what future prospects technologies such as bidirectional charging in e-mobility could have as a flexible storage option.

Timeline:

  • 01:21 Private electricity storage systems for households are a key component of the energy transition. The home storage market has grown exponentially, but the picture in 2024 is surprising: instead of the expected expansion, many suppliers are suddenly facing falling prices, full warehouses and uncertain demand. What is behind this?
  • 04:38 Assessment of the current status of electricity storage on the German market as a whole: are there similar dynamics in the commercial and grid storage sectors?
  • 06:46 What role will bidirectional charging play as a flexible storage option? Will the incentive for electric car drivers remain?
  • 13:47 Will we even need stationary home storage systems in the future if more and more electric vehicles can charge bidirectionally?
  • 16:06 The drop in the price of energy storage systems could be attractive for consumers, but a dilemma for manufacturers. How do you see the balance between economies of scale, quality requirements and economic viability?
  • 20:14 Which trends and technologies will be decisive for the success of home storage systems in the next five to ten years?
